SWL Robins vs Boyanup 12/5/13

Last year’s South West Hockey League premiers Boyanup travelled to Busselton for a Mother’s Day clash with local team Robins with both teams out to cement their spot in the top four.

An expected hard physical game was what eventuated with a tussle right down to the final minutes of the game.

Robins started off well with a strong attacking play by Dee Garstone, Penne Yorke and Lauren Clarke combining well to set up Robins first scoring opportunity which was denied by the strong Boyanup defence.

Boyanup soon retaliated with a series of strong plays resulting in four penalty corners which were repulsed by the strong defence of Tiff Jecks and Anna Roberts.

Robins captain Helen O’Neill led the way with a committed effort to clear the ball while under extreme pressure from the Boyanup team.

With the final stages of the first half Robins put together a number of sweet well-placed paces to move the ball from defence into the attacking D but only to see Chloe Carter’s shot go past the far post.

It was a few tense minutes late in the first half Boyanup again having opportunities but young Robins players Kristy Pearse and Jasmine Burrell were solid in defence and then Garstone and Clarke combining well but unable to get the ball into the Boyanup goal.

Despite play see-sawing from end to end, both teams went into the break without a score on the board.

The second half started out how the first half finished with Boyanup getting another penalty corner only to be denied on the goal line by Dana Carter.

Boyanup seemed to have stepped up a gear and were dominating the game and soon had their sixth penalty corner for the game only to be again denied by Robins goal-keeper Amber Vivien who was playing a great game in the net.

Soon the impasse was broken with Boyanup midfielder Jenna Gmeiner getting free on the right and striking a strong shot at goal which GK Viven got a hand to but was unable to keep the ball out as it deflected into the goal giving Boyanup a the lead late in the game.

Robins responded with another strong drive by Scout Regan and Paula Thompson resulting in  a penalty corner but they were unable to convert this opportunity.

Time ran out for Robins with Boyanup celebrating Mother’s Day with a 1 – 0 win.

Robins will need to step up a gear when they take on Towns South in Bunbury next Sunday to ensure they keep in touch with the leaders of the competition.
